L’intervista è avvenuta attraverso Skype per metterci in contatto con Bhaskar che si trovava presso gli Head Quarter della stessa azienda in Estonia.

La conversazione inizia con una domanda ovvia (che io chiamavo dumb question perchè effettivamente credo che vengano poste ogni santa volta): why QIK?

La nascita del brand con un nome particolare inizia nel 2006 quando si voleva portare la videocomunicazione, non ancora il video broadcast, su piattaforme come symbian, rim e windows mobile, i primi a offrire la coppia di fotocamere, anteriore e posteriore. La presenza del T9 in maniera massiccia per la digitazione su telefonini crea così un contesto particolare per cui per offrire rapidamente, quick, il servizio hanno cercato di rimanere in poche digitazioni, il minimo possibile, creando QIK. Si è rivelato utile oltre che per la ricerca anche per la registrazione di un dominio breve, in un periodo in cui servizi di url shotner come bit.ly erano ancora poco in voga e tanto meno utilizzati.

La spiegazione del nome QIK a livello di brand design ha molto colpito anche perchè a differenza di altri competitor è facile da ricordare e indica la velocità del servizio a differenza della videochiamata di H3G.
Oltre che la velocità, punto su cui il nome dell’app fa riferimento, Bhaskar sottolinea l’esperienza d’uso e semplicità con cui avviene tra cellulare e cellulare, seamless, senza intoppi, come noi del blog abbiamo potuto testare nuovamente prima dell’intervista.

Una domanda particolare che è maturata nel tempo è dedicata alla serie Fringe. Infatti Sprint, il primo partner a credere nella potenzialità dell’app, ha fatto comparire prima l’HTC evo4g e poi la stessa QIK tra i protagonisti della serie di J.J. Abrams, facendo intendere quanto ci sia di potenzialità ma anche di un prodotto così futuribile, tanto che in realtà c’è già. Abbiamo chiesto se lo sviluppo di QIK sia così fantascientifico, o in generale si sentono come un prodotto del futuro.

Il manager di QIK ci afferma che il partner ci ha creduto e ha spinto per l’uso dell’app nei prodotti mentre l’apparizione nella serie fa comunque pensare rispetto quello che sono le loro guideline progettuali. La videochiamata o l’uso del video è più naturale rispetto al solo parlare. La video mail e il video broadcast rendono tutto più semplice, anche con la possibilità di collegare ai social network e pubblicare direttamente su youtube, al pari degli sms attuali. Altro punto che sembra fantascienza ma è realtà, QIK ha la possibilità dello switch tra cam anteriore e posteriore durante l’uso. La dimostrazione che ci porta personalmente Bhaskar è la chiamata alla moglie appena arrivato in Estonia che alla classica “dovresti vedere ciò che vedo io” gli è bastato un click e ha potuto offrire il panorama durante la chiamata in diretta.

La potenza di QIK nell’analisi che ha preceduto l’intervista ha confermato che permette videochiamate, video mail e video broadcast anche via 3G a differenza di sistemi UMTS classici senza inficiare il traffico telefonico ma un piccolo consumo dati (dovendo agli inizi essere supportato su terminali prima delle tariffe flat al pari di oggi). Il potenziale dell’app si è visto nel test che abbiamo effettuato con terminali, come ideos, senza fotocamera anteriore e di bassa gamma, comprendendo quanto sia alla portata di tutti l’uso. Usabilità e reperibilità più semplici, a differenza del nuovo gTalk che è presente solo per la nuova release di android gingerbread 2.3.4 e che richiede soprattutto l’hardware alla base per la video. Però Google permette la videochiamata oltre che tra android, smartphone, anche con android, tablet, e gtalk su chrome/pc. QIK rimarrà solo sugli smartphone? Perchè non è mai stato pensato un client per il pc?

Il co-fondatore di QIK ci esprime che è un’applicazione pensata soprattutto per il mondo mobile, riflettendo quanto siamo oggi in movimento e quanto il trend lo confermi, anche quando hanno iniziato (basta sempre riflettere sulla legge di Moore sulle tecnologie). La tendenza al mobile, contrapposto al desktop, per esempio non essere in ufficio, non ha necessitato lo sviluppo del client per computer. Attualmente (senza neanche porre la domanda) dopo l’acquisizione da parte di Skype stanno conpidendo le tecnologie, quindi potrebbero esserci sviluppi eventuali in quel senso o per loro o per la stessa Skype.

Le domande e soprattutto le risposte hanno offerto molti spunti di riflessione ma una domanda che abbiamo distillato dalle considerazioni durante la stessa intervista è quanto sia interessante e potenzialmente unico l’uso della chat durante il video broadcast.

Relativamente alla questione è interessante che si ricordi che la comunicazione può essere bidirezionale ma anche unidirezionale, anche da uno a molti. Il video dal vivo permette di far vedere ma anche di sapere in tempo reale cosa pensano o vogliono sapere gli altri di quello che succede o che stiamo facendo vedere. Senza dover apprendere o acquisire app differenti o comprendere altri servizi.
